Thanks, Encyclopedia Dramatica [17 Aug 2009|11:10pm]
"This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US department of energy.
I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility.
After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the national oceanographic and atmospheric administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the national aeronautics and space administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US department of agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the food and drug administration.
At the appropriate time as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the national institute of standards and technology and the US naval observatory, I get into my national highway traffic safety administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads built by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the environmental protection agency, using legal tender issued by the federal reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US postal service and drop the kids off at the public school.
Then, after spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the department of labor and the occupational safety and health administration, I drive back to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and the fire marshall's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department.
I then log onto the internet which was developed by the defense advanced research projects administration and post on freerepublic and fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right."

Tripped the circuit breaker last night while cooking for the first time in my basement flat. This seems especially concerning as I still haven't included my (ordered) computer in the fray. Here's to a positive result from all this.

Elsewise, LOVE IT. Pictures to follow.

Oh, right: [15 Jul 2009|04:45am]
I leave tomorrow (16th) for Costa Rica. I'll get some big city, beach, volcano, and cloud forest, and I'm so excited. What would a trip be without a journal and a camera? Luckily I'lln't know. Oh, and!:
try it.

Other news: applying for health insurance, which is only stressful; moving from Athens in two weeks & I'll be setting up in Atlanta in roughly three; buying a desktop; finishing GEB.

And I enjoyed this HP.

Part of me wants to get obsessively organized for my move to Atlanta. You know: plan furniture, design optimal grocery lists, iron clothing. But, that seems a little over-the-top. I rationalise (relative) inaction fearing that micro-management will be unsustainable, and thus unproductive, in the long run. Despite this, I'm torn.

SO, I'm just planning the fuck out of some other deals. New computers, Costa Rica, GMail.

Early yesterday morning, I watched the documentary The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill last night. The film chronicles Mark Bittner's maintaining of a flock of Cherry-Headed Conures in the Bay Area. I found it truly refreshing. Maybe it was his compassion. Or, maybe his passion for passions.

Mark discusses at length the idiosyncrasies of the birds - especially the need for a second half whether it's male or female or even of the same species. For one, each bird needs another to clean the feathers behind its neck; but, more importantly, the birds rely on one another for emotional support and for companionship. Throughout the movie, you get a sense of the camaraderie he enjoys and the relationships he's able to form.

April! [02 Apr 2009|10:57am]
First, Karl Rove: writes well about that which he knows best; then projects it against his opponents, deserved or not.

Do some words with neutral connotations dominate, as a result of its pronunciation, the tone of the sentence? Or, maybe some words carry a stronger weight when they're in the middle of a phrase or sentence? From the above article: "Only 39% now harbor supportive views of it."

I loved Washington D.C. I visited Meg (!) and toured the 2nd floor of the Canon Building -- oh, the Rotunda! Searches for Timothy Geithner were sadly unsuccessful. And, reinforcing the notion of high-density politics, the President was inducting Eric Holder as Attorney General on George Washington's campus while we visited. Food in D.C., spectacular.

At heart, everyone's good.

I love the dreams you have right after you've pressed "snooze" on your alarm. You know, the ones you can control. Nurture the good; correct the bad. Either way, your nine-minute snooze feels beautifully long. But, where was mine today?

Why not fight a winning battle? [07 Aug 2008|03:43am]
Once I was seventeen, and you were, too.

See, we all shine, after we've tailored our four years to form-fit to individual goals and desires. But, as the twelve-month mark approaches, we shit bricks. There are too many things to do, to keep up with, and to manage. Or, maybe I've failed at the above.

No, the secret is finding a suitable, lofty goal. SLG, man, and I've no idea how to define ess or ell.

See, perception is reality. And, some reality is all perception. No perception is not reality, but you already knew that. Create something of which others can be proud, vicariously. This is your mantra. Where am I?

When was the last time you felt free? And, when was the last time you built something from the inside out?Collapse )

We went for his relief (they had facilities!). And, so I could meet his doctor - a terrific man with a two-year old. I loved his bravery - to bring life into the world despite the sadness he'd surely seen.

We didn't quite make it a lap. No, fate saved his first for when he'll be a survivor.
Even if that's not technically until five years from now.

That was the thing about the Seasons:
Cyclic beasts who could conserve forces
Better than any damned fool.

But our modernity would not be made:
to stand under such a support.
And the patch? Race, divide, and race again.

Self-awareness was a slippery slope
to us-isms and a sense of entitlement
No, we failed ecumenically - ecomentally.

While seeking roots (the four three or more)
we find like breath-ins of glory.
And we look everywhere for us to sharet.

How to Cast an Absentee Ballot in Georgia [09 Jan 2008|09:24am]
This is too late for those of you who haven't registered (and, if you're unsure, see to part (i) below); however, I've just learned how to do it and thought I'd share.

  • First, you need to find out how the state has you registered as a voter. Using the Poll Locator you can find which polling place you should visit to vote in person. But, it also provides key information for your absentee ballot request by giving you the "Name" and "Address" under which you are registered. This'll help reduce confusion in the registrar's office as to who you are.

  • We're almost done! Now, fill out the first page of the Application for an Official Absentee Ballot. The first box is the information harvested above. Also, Georgia will be part of "Super Tuesday"; e.g. our primaries are on February 5th, 2008. Be sure to choose a primary! Note: when you choose a descriptive code, the "NR" option mails your ballot to your address as registered. If you live out of the county now, select "OP" and include a new address in the next section.

Now, fax or mail that page to the Registrar's Office:
Chatham County Board of Registrars
1117-E Eisenhower Drive
P.O. Box 13757
Savannah, GA 31406
Telephone: (912) 790-1520
Fax: (912) 790-1519

Happy Voting!

I'm having trouble sleeping.

See, it all started when I was sitting on Jason's hearth, underneath a Roy Lichtenstein painting. One of his dogs, Lemony, had taken post on my right-hand side -- effectively preventing me from writing. So I tried to visualize with my left hand when I was captivated by the shadows. Maybe someone mentioned the word "projection" or maybe the dog was sending me mind messages, but I started thinking about shadows and the manner in which one could recreate the convex hull of an object from several of these projections. That is, how many shadows does one need to determine the actual shape of an object? Finitely many?

Later, Jon and I discussed business -- well, at least some deranged - though not always legal - versions of it. I think it started with pyramid schemes; however, it ended with a strategy to extend investment opportunities to the nation's poorest citizens. Many concepts here were thrown around that'll require research (to display even a potential). Capital gains taxes, contracts, lotteries, nonprofit organizations' abilities, etc.

Later still, I came across the UK National Lottery Wheeling Challenge, or how many tickets need be purchased to guarantee n-matches with the winning lottery numbers? And, what combinations should be chosen for those tickets? (E.g. for a perfect 6-match in their "we-choose-6-from-49-numbers", you'd need to include all 13,983,816 different possibilities). According to Richard Lloyd's website, the current best for 3-matches is 163 tickets. Somewhere, I believe we can find a method for generating the optimal ticket set. I think it's work-out-able -- even if it must be by brute force.

I'm planning on downloading Apple's Developer's Tools during class tomorrow.

Oy, I need to pack.

I love the slippery feel of the road when it's drizzling. And, the way it looks when you watch it. Fall through outdoor lamps: into and out of view. Remarkable.

It seems like SiCKO was less about health care and more about why we should move elsewhere.
